Overview

Stroke is a leading cause of disability and death in India, with ischemic stroke accounting for over 85% of cases. Early recognition and timely medical intervention are crucial for improving survival and functional outcomes. Common warning signs include sudden weakness or numbness (especially on one side), trouble speaking, vision changes, dizziness, and loss of balance.

The mainstay of acute stroke care is intravenous thrombolysis using rt PA (recombinant tissue plasminogen activator), which is most effective when administered within a narrow therapeutic window from symptom onset. In more severe cases involving large vessel occlusions, mechanical thrombectomy is used to physically remove the clot from the affected artery using catheter-based techniques.

Baby Memorial Hospital’s Stroke & Neurointervention Centre is equipped with advanced imaging, 24/7 stroke-ready protocols, and a specialised team of neurologists, neurointerventionalists, and critical care staff. The centre is the first in Kerala and second in India to be accredited as an Advanced Stroke Centre by the Quality and Accreditation InstituteCentre for Accreditation of Health & Social Care (QAI–CAHSC), recognising adherence to the highest standards in stroke care delivery.
