Overview

The Department of Cardiac Anaesthesia at Baby Memorial Hospital provides specialised anaesthetic care for patients undergoing complex cardiac, thoracic, and vascular surgeries, ensuring the highest standards of safety and precision. The team of expert cardiac anaesthesiologists manages patients through every phase of care from preoperative assessment and intraoperative monitoring to postoperative recovery in the advanced Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU). With expertise in handling high-risk and critically ill patients, the department focuses on maintaining stability, reducing surgical risk, and supporting faster recovery after surgery.

Comprehensive anaesthesia services are provided for procedures such as beating-heart bypass surgery, valve repair or replacement, congenital heart defect correction, and vascular reconstructions. In selected cases, the team performs awake cardiac surgeries for patients who cannot tolerate general anaesthesia, particularly benefiting elderly or pulmonary-compromised individuals. The department is equipped with intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), advanced haemodynamic monitoring, and goal-directed fluid therapy systems to ensure optimal cardiac performance during surgery. Pain control and enhanced recovery protocols are carefully tailored to each patient. Working in close coordination with Cardiothoracic Surgery, Cardiology, and Critical Care, the department ensures a seamless, patient-focused approach that emphasises innovation, safety, and superior clinical outcomes in every cardiac procedure
